In Velva, N.D., population 1,000, officials ordered about 800 residents to evacuate by 9 p.m. Saturday. City Commissioner
Paul Thomas said that if levees are finished by the time the river crests there, the town should stay dry. "But we're being extra cautious because human life matters," he said.

“People are worried about their town,” said Paul Thomas, a Velva city commissioner and the incident commander for the flood. “We all have hope, but it’s the fear of the unknown.”

Evacuation orders from the Governor were announced at 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 25. Also on Saturday, the city authorized closure of Highway 41 bridge to all traffic due to some erosion concerns on the north side of the bridge. An evacuation center for Velva residents was opened by the Red Cross at Turtle Lake, North Dakota. Essential personal will be issued a pass to be in the city during daylight hours.
